The Urban Design for the Expo Line project implements the vision of a multi-modal Transit Parkway in a safe, balanced and cohesive greenbelt setting. The Exposition Transit Parkway combines the light rail line, bikeway facilities, pedestrian linkages, landscape design, station architecture, public art and related system facilities into a seamless, integrated project. The design elements of the project embody the central aesthetic theme of the project: “To weave a Transit Parkway through an existing urban fabric allowing communities to come together, integrate neighborhoods and allow for the transit system to become a source of civic pride.” In creating this Transit Parkway, the project remains respectful of the Final Environmental Impact Statement/Report, mindful of community expectations and promotes design continuity along the alignment.

This Urban Design vision is implemented with a focus on five major areas:

1. Landscaping and Station Design
Through landscaping elements, the Transit Parkway is designed as a “Linear Park” from Downtown Los Angeles to Culver City. The stations evolve within this linear park as a “Band of Colored Islands”.

2. Station Area Plan
The Station Area Plan focuses on physical improvements of the pedestrian real within a 300’ radius of each station creating a safe and comfortable access path for surrounding residents.

3. Vertical Elements
All vertical elements of the project are designed to integrate a weaving theme into the overall aesthetic. Implementing a design that expresses its utilitarian function helps creating a timeless elegance.

4. Station Canopy Design
The architecture of the canopy and associated elements will create a sense of place at each station. A design that is expressive of movement and place will create an engaging environment for all patrons.

5. Public Art
Original artworks will create a unique identity for each station, and enhance the passenger experience. Artists have been selected to develop artworks for each station. For more information click here.
