Design Elements
Expo Design
The Expo Line has been designed with a central aesthetic theme: To weave a multi-modal transit parkway through an urban fabric to unite communities, integrate neighborhoods and create a source of civic pride. Designs for the Expo Line seamlessly integrate light rail, bikeway facilities and pedestrian linkages in a safe, balanced and cohesive setting. Through landscaping, canopy design and public art, Expo Line stations are designed to provide an engaging environment with a sense of place. Designs were created with the Final Environmental Impact Report and community expectations in mind.
Urban Design Committee (UDC)
An Urban Design Committee was appointed by the Expo Board of Directors in 2006 to provide input into the design of the Expo Line. The Committee is composed of 14 members representing communities and stakeholders along the entire Expo alignment. The group met regularly during the design process for Expo Phase 1 to offer input into the design, landscaping and art for the light rail system.

Station Art
Los Angeles Metro’s public art program dedicates .5 percent of rail construction project costs to creating original artwork at each station. More that 200 artists submitted qualifications for consideration for the Expo Line stations, which were then subject to a peer review process involving community and stakeholder input. The following artists were selected to provide works to furnish the stations along Phase 1 of the Expo Line:
- 23rd Street — Christofer Dierdorff
- Jefferson/USC — Samuel Rodriguez
- Expo Park/USC — Robbert Flick
- Vermont — Jessica McCoy
- Western — Ronald Llanos
- Crenshaw — Willie Robert Middlebrook, Jr.
- La Brea — Jose Lozano
- La Cienega — Daniel Gonzalez
- Culver City — Tom LaDuke
